The Spectacular Karst Landscape in Thailand: a Geological Formation

The erosion of limestone has formed the spectacular karst landscape in Krabi and Phang Nga Bay (once coral reefs hundreds of millions of years ago) due to the chemical weathering where acid rain, which produces carbonic acid, has dissolved layers of soluble bedrock. Karst landscapes feature limestone cliffs, caves, underground streams, and sinkholes.

The islands of Krabi and Phang Nga Bay were formed by the movements of massive plates of earth and lifted out of the seas. This geological process has created a landscape that really fascinates me, and I have been taking quite some pictures during my stays here. Check them out.

The iconic cliff that vertically juts out of the greenish water at James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay is probably the most famous limestone cliff in all of Thailand.

    Beautiful post!! Thanks for the information on the formations 🙂

    I’d like to visit some of these geological landscapes in the Thai islands, but I’m trying to avoid Koh Phi Phi and any of the other overly crowded islands with tourists. Which of these spots would you recommend to visit which has beautiful formations but the least amount of tourists? If it’s more remote to get to, that’s okay with me!

    Hi Eric!

    Just driving around the roads of Krabi is amazing, especially around Nong Thale and Ao Luek Town. Another place I would recommend is Samet Nangshe Viewpoint in Phang Nga, between Phuket and Krabi:

    Taking a longtail boat trip in Phang Nga Bay is also breathtaking. However, James Bond Island is very touristy so you might want to skip that.

      Thank you for the recommendation! I’ve heard Krabi is extremely touristic as well, but maybe not all of it!
      Would you say that Nong Thale and Ao Leuk town are not as touristic?

      Samet Nagshe viewpoint looks stunning, but I’m more looking for a beach spot 🙂
