When we have traveled out of Bangkok to places like Ayutthaya and Damnoen Saduak, we have taken a minibus as it was the fastest option. But the drivers are pretty crazy, and after reading news about a horrible accident on the highway involving a minibus, we decided to go by train to Maeklong Railway Market. The journey, including a short ferry ride, takes about 2½ hours and cost only 23 baht.
Wongwian Yai Railway Station 8:35
From Wongwian Yai Railway Station in Bangkok, we took the 8:35 a.m. train to Mahachai Railway Station, which takes about 50 minutes.
The ticket cost only 10 baht for me and zero for my wife. Yep, the train is free for Thais.
In the beginning, it was a bit bumpy ride, but once we got out of Bangkok, it was a nice scenic train ride passing through lush greenery, mangroves, swamps with water birds flying above them, and sea salt farms.
Mahachai Pier 09:40
When we arrived at Mahachai Station around 09:30, we had to walk a few hundred meters to the Mahachai Pier where we took a short ferry ride for 3 baht across the river. Once across, we had to do a 5-minute walk to Ban Laem Railway Station where we bought tickets for the 10:10 a.m. train.
Ban Laem Railway Station 10:10
Same story; 10 baht for me and zero, zip, zilch, nada for my wife.
The ticket inspector clips the tickets even though the train is free for Thais.

Maeklong Station 11:10
At 11:10 a.m. we arrived at Maeklong Station which is the last stop. From here, we walked back to the market and watched the 11.30 train passing through the market. After spending some time here, we took a tuk-tuk to Amphawa floating market.
